Bosch Rexroth Axial Piston Motors Explained: A6VM, A2FM and Choosing the Right Drive

Bosch Rexroth axial piston motors turn hydraulic flow into rotary drive power for winches, wheels, drums, fans and gearboxes. This guide explains the main types and helps you pick the right one.

Bent-axis vs swashplate

Rexroth axial piston motors use two proven designs. Bent-axis motors (such as the A2FM, A2FE and A6VM families) are extremely robust and efficient at high pressure. Swashplate motors (such as the A10VM / A10VE) are compact and integrate neatly into closed-circuit drives. Both are available across a wide displacement range.

Fixed vs variable motors

A fixed motor (A2FM, A2FE, A4FM, A10FM) delivers a constant displacement — simple and reliable for a fixed drive ratio. A variable motor (A6VM, A6VE, A10VM, A36VM) can change its displacement to vary output speed and torque, giving a wider speed range from the same pump — essential for travel drives that need both high tractive effort and fast travel.

Popular series at a glance

  • A6VM — all-purpose high-pressure variable motor, sizes 28–1000, up to 530 bar.
  • A6VE — variable motor optimised for integration in mechanical gearboxes.
  • A2FM / A2FE — compact bent-axis fixed motors, up to 500 bar.
  • A10VM / A10VE — medium-pressure motors with two-point control for closed circuits.

Pair the right motor with a matching variable or fixed axial piston pump for a complete drive. Every series page lists the English datasheet and displacement range.
