External Gear Pump

External Gear Pump supplied by Twin Hydraulics Engineering, Malaysia

External gear pumps are the most widely used pumps in hydraulics for good reason: few moving parts, tolerance of less-than-perfect fluid, high speeds, and a price that suits machines built in volume. Two meshing gears carry fluid around the housing from inlet to outlet — simple enough to be reliable, cheap enough to replace rather than repair.

Twin Hydraulics Engineering supplies the Rexroth AZP programme — AZPB, AZPF, AZPG, AZPN and multiple-pump combinations — across Malaysia. Gear pumps are one of the areas where machines arrive fitted with anything, so we also supply Parker, Eaton, Danfoss and other makes, and can cross an obsolete pump to a current equivalent on displacement, shaft and flange.

Where they fit
Mobile machinery, tipper and lorry hydraulics, power packs, agricultural equipment, and anywhere demand is steady and duty is rough. For quieter operation choose an internal gear pump; for varying demand, an axial piston variable pump.

Specifying a replacement
Displacement in cm³/rev — the number in the type code, for example AZPF-22-022
Shaft — parallel keyed, splined or tapered
Flange — SAE or European mount
Ports — threaded or flanged, and their orientation
Direction of rotation — a pump run backwards fails quickly

Multiple pumps, meaning two or three sections on one shaft, are common on mobile equipment and are ordered as a single assembly. We can quote the exact stack.

Frequently asked
Why is my gear pump noisy? Most often aeration — a restricted or leaking suction line drawing air, or low fluid level. Cavitation from a starved inlet destroys a pump quickly, so investigate before replacing.
Can a gear pump be repaired? On larger units yes; on common sizes replacement is usually more economical. Our workshop repairs pumps from all major brands — see hydraulic pump and motor repair.
What pressure will they take? It depends on series and size. Send the type code and we will give you the exact figures rather than a general answer.
My pump is a brand you do not list — can you match it? Send us the nameplate, or the pump itself. Gear pumps cross well between manufacturers once displacement, shaft, flange and rotation are known.
