External gear pumps are the most widely used pumps in hydraulics for good reason: few moving parts, tolerance of less-than-perfect fluid, high speeds, and a price that suits machines built in volume. Two meshing gears carry fluid around the housing from inlet to outlet — simple enough to be reliable, cheap enough to replace rather than repair.

Where they fit
Mobile machinery, tipper and lorry hydraulics, power packs, agricultural equipment, and anywhere demand is steady and duty is rough. For quieter operation choose an internal gear pump; for varying demand, an axial piston variable pump.
Specifying a replacement
— Displacement in cm³/rev — the number in the type code, for example AZPF-22-022
— Shaft — parallel keyed, splined or tapered
— Flange — SAE or European mount
— Ports — threaded or flanged, and their orientation
— Direction of rotation — a pump run backwards fails quickly

Frequently asked
Why is my gear pump noisy? Most often aeration — a restricted or leaking suction line drawing air, or low fluid level. Cavitation from a starved inlet destroys a pump quickly, so investigate before replacing.
