What Is a Hydraulic Power Pack? A Practical Guide

A hydraulic power pack (or power unit) is the heart of a hydraulic system — the self-contained unit that generates the flow and pressure to drive cylinders, motors and tools. If you run presses, lifts, test rigs or machinery, understanding the power pack helps you specify, run and maintain it well. Twin Hydraulics Engineering designs and fabricates hydraulic power packs in Malaysia, backed by our Bosch Rexroth partnership.

What’s inside a power pack?

  • Electric motor — drives the pump.
  • Hydraulic pump — converts mechanical power into fluid flow and pressure (often a Bosch Rexroth axial piston or gear pump).
  • Reservoir (tank) — stores and cools the hydraulic oil.
  • Valves — pressure relief, directional and flow control valves to direct and protect the system.
  • Filtration — keeps the oil clean and the components protected.
  • Accessories — gauges, sensors, heat exchangers and manifolds.

Sizing a power pack

The right power pack is defined by the flow rate and pressure your actuators need, the duty cycle (how continuously it runs), the reservoir size for cooling, and the control the application requires. Under-size it and the machine is slow or overheats; over-size it and you waste energy.

Power packs bring together pumps, valves and filtration — all of which we supply and integrate.
