Choosing the Right Hydraulic Hose: Pressure, Size & Standards

A hydraulic hose is only as good as its match to the application. Get the pressure rating, size or end fittings wrong and you risk leaks, bursts and downtime. This guide explains how to specify a hydraulic hose correctly. Twin Hydraulics Engineering supplies HANSA-FLEX hoses and fittings across Malaysia.

The STAMPED method

Engineers use the simple checklist STAMPED to specify a hose:

  • Size — inside diameter (to carry the flow) and outside diameter (for routing and clamps).
  • Temperature — of both the fluid and the surrounding environment.
  • Application — routing, bend radius, movement and abrasion.
  • Media — the fluid type, so the tube material is compatible.
  • Pressure — the maximum working and peak pressures.
  • Ends — the fittings, threads and orientation required.
  • Delivery — length, quantity and lead time.

Understanding hose standards

Hydraulic hoses are built to recognised standards that define construction and pressure class — for example EN 853 1SN and 2SN braided hoses, EN 856 4SH spiral hoses for high pressure, and EN 857 compact hoses for tight routing. Choosing the right standard ensures the hose meets the pressure and bend-radius your machine needs. Browse our hydraulic hose & piping range.

Why assembly quality matters

Most hose failures happen at the fitting, not the hose. Correct crimping, the right fitting and clean cuts are essential for a leak-free, long-lasting assembly. As a HANSA-FLEX partner we supply hoses, fittings and assemblies built to spec. See the HANSA-FLEX range.
