The STAMPED method
Engineers use the simple checklist STAMPED to specify a hose:
- Size — inside diameter (to carry the flow) and outside diameter (for routing and clamps).
- Temperature — of both the fluid and the surrounding environment.
- Application — routing, bend radius, movement and abrasion.
- Media — the fluid type, so the tube material is compatible.
- Pressure — the maximum working and peak pressures.
- Ends — the fittings, threads and orientation required.
- Delivery — length, quantity and lead time.
Understanding hose standards
Hydraulic hoses are built to recognised standards that define construction and pressure class — for example EN 853 1SN and 2SN braided hoses, EN 856 4SH spiral hoses for high pressure, and EN 857 compact hoses for tight routing.
