Hydraulic Pressure Valves Explained: Relief, Reducing & Sequence

Pressure valves protect your hydraulic system and control how much force it delivers. Get them wrong and you risk burst hoses, damaged pumps or a machine that cannot do its job. This guide from Twin Hydraulics Engineering explains the main types of hydraulic pressure valve and where each is used. We supply the full Bosch Rexroth range in Malaysia.

The main types of pressure valve

  • Pressure relief valve — the system’s safety device. It limits maximum pressure by diverting excess oil to tank, protecting pumps, hoses and components from overload.
  • Pressure reducing valve — maintains a lower, constant pressure in one branch of a circuit than the main system pressure, for clamps or pilot lines that need less force.
  • Sequence valve — only allows flow to a second circuit once a set pressure is reached in the first, so operations happen in the correct order.
  • Counterbalance / brake valve — holds a load against gravity and gives controlled, smooth lowering.
  • Unloading valve — diverts pump flow to tank at low pressure to save energy when full flow isn’t needed.

Choosing and setting pressure valves

Select the valve for your flow rate and pressure range, and always set the relief valve to protect the weakest component in the circuit. Correct adjustment is as important as the right part — a relief set too high offers no protection, and one set too low starves the machine.
