A control throttle meters flow in a line to set the speed of a cylinder or motor. The adjustment sets the metering area, and the flow that results follows the pressure drop across it, so speed varies with load. Control throttles are the usual way to set feed and return rates on a circuit that does not need the constant-speed behaviour of a pressure-compensated flow-control valve.
