Matching the gauge thread to your fitting
BSP (G) parallel threads such as 1/4 BSP and 1/2 BSP are the European and Malaysian hydraulic standard and seal on a bonded washer or flat face. NPT tapered threads (1/4 NPT, 1/2 NPT, 1/8 NPT) are common on American-built equipment and seal on the thread with PTFE tape or sealant. BSPT and R (ISO 7) tapered threads appear on Japanese and older process equipment, while 7/16-20 UNF and M14x1.5 are found on compact hydraulic test points and mobile machinery. Mixing a parallel gauge with a tapered port, or vice versa, is the most common cause of leaking gauges, so always check both the thread form and the size. As a rule, NS40 to NS63 gauges carry 1/8" or 1/4" connections and NS100 and NS160 gauges carry 1/2" connections.
